Life Rhythms & Routines

I Finally made it up a mountain again
It's a full moon tonight, and I am excited for the future.  Big and medium changes are happening, and mostly I feel like SPRING is actually here.

Fall 2024
I love setting new plans in motion and setting up fall rhythms and routines.  Last September I returned to work, we started having a nanny three days a week. Lily started nursery school (1-3:30) daily and wraparound nursery (8-1) twice a week. Ezra and Lily started swim lessons on Saturdays.  Ezra started scouts in the evening.

Winter 2024
In December, we hired a second nanny to cover the other two days a week so I could go back to work full time.  We stopped doing Scouts and moved swim lessons from Saturday to after school.

Spring 2025
We now only have two days of childcare.  Andy has found himself with some short range work flexibility and is now watching Aubrey and Clara three days a week.  We decided that swim lessons have run their course (or maybe that we need to pay more for better swim lessons) but we are pausing lessons in April.  Lily's wraparound nursery had an intake of two year olds and she is now the absolute oldest, so with Andy's flexibility we are stopping the wraparound and she will be free 5 mornings a week.

None of these moves is really sustainable - Andy will go back to work - we will need more childcare. Lily will start full time school in the fall, and the awkward 2.5 hour days will be a thing of her past and of the twin's future.  Nothing that we are doing now moves anything forward to any grand or sustainable balance of work and life and family.  Everything we are doing is so temporary - it's nice to enjoy Lily's last few months before she starts full time school.  Aubrey and Clara are way more fun than they were a year ago, and Andy is doing a great job at Daddy daycare.  I like getting things done in work and talking to adults.

Although it's not arguably within my planner nature, "fine for now" is actually a really nice space to be.

Do you find you change up your rhythms and routines seasonally? Do you notice when it's a full moon? have you had any big changes recently to your daily or weekly schedules

  1. It sounds like you are in a fluid part of your life. I am glad that Andy has a bit more time to watch the babies, and that you are getting to be in and are enjoying adult land for the moment. Hopefully you will get into a groove at some point, but you know what they say: the only thing constant is change! I also have a hard time with that, but I guess it keeps Alzheimer's at bay?

  2. I thrive on routine and constant changes would make me very antsy, but I am not surprised that in your season of life, change is constant. You're doing well trying to go with the flow.
I just returned back to full-time work in the office (after 4 years of 80% telework) and it's an awful adjustment again for me. I miss my flexibility, my slow mornings, not mentioning all the upheaval we're experiencing right now in our workspace. Not my favorite time right now.
