I've decided to have a bit of a monthly focus for February, but I don't have a great word for it. It's basically "do things to reduce stress". Here's what I have so far:
- Sleep. Get enough sleep. Try to get up early, but not if it means getting less than 7.5 hours of sleep. Focus on bedtime over wake-time (wake time is pretty set by the kids)
- Move. Walking and stretching and low impact bike rides (not every ride needs to be a HIIT ride, even if they are super fun)
- Comfort. Don't be unnecessarily uncomfortable - make sure I am not cold or hungry. Wear slippers. Change into soft trousers/pyjamas. Light a smelly candle or add a scent to the diffuser
- Environment. Nightly house reset, for shared spaces. I like waking up to a tidy downstairs. I hate tidying up downstairs in the evening. BUT... a tidy environment reduces my own stress so I will do a house sweep every night and put things away and try not to resent it.
While these things probably seem like good ideas for life I'm committing to them for February only because February is a short month and you can do anything for 28 days.
Planning Thoughts
On Sunday I sat down and wrote out a plan for the week. It looked like a very exciting week - I had gym with my gym buddy, a live Peloton ride, our cleaner was coming... I was excited for the week ahead.
Maybe I often live in the future because it is exciting and fun in a way that now sometimes isn't. Looking at my week ahead looked sparkly and full of possibility! Looking at the week behind included getting vomited on by a toddler. Looking at the present on Sunday was... fine. Vomit-less. But still, I fully expected my week plan to not happen.
Rather than be sad about it, I tried to enjoy thinking about how much fun the week *could* be, while also realizing I would probably get vomited on and miss most of the things.
Monday morning I woke up and started reading Best Laid Plans and had coffee and did a stretch and looked at my planner and then the day went... well! I was able to think in work and had an overall very good day. Unfortunately our cleaner cancelled (they have come once, and cancelled twice, which is why I'm not feeling the "oh I have a cleaner it's great" vibes... but still at least our Bathrooms got cleaned once).
On Tuesday I was tired, did not do morning routine, but did get a Peloton shout out for my 200th ride from Bradley Rose!
And I went to the gym with my gym buddy for a legs routine which was fun. We do evening gym and so I didn't get to sleep until 10:30pm.
On Wednesday I woke up with the kids, rolled out of bed, downed coffee, got kids off to school, sat down at my desk and started responding to emails and doing other random unfocused work. At 8:55 I had a pop-up notification on outlook for a blood test, which I forgot was booked that morning, so I ran to the car and drove really fast (and also slow because traffic) to the GP, where I arrived 2 minutes late (they cancel if you're 5 minutes late). I had my blood draw, then went back home, then proceeded to be mostly unfocused until 3pm when I panic started to get work done and then didn't "finish" until 5:20 when I realized I was meant to get the kids and relieve the nanny by 5:30 so I ran to pick up and left everything an unfinished mess.
Anyways, my glorious "flow through live" organization system is still a work in progress.
Clothing Thoughts
I know this should include real photos but clothing upgrade project is moving along! The Burgundy Blazer from my last post is amazing and I love it. The shoes were painful and returned. I managed to find one dress from my new favourite store - Crew
I also found a pair of Chelsea boots from Clarks. Are they fancy? No. Are they boots? yes. As the British say - it does what it says on the tinI used to love buying shoes and owned lots of shoes. Now, work shoes are my final clothing upgrade issue. I gave up and bought black work trousers from Boden, which fit great but are £75 which is why I resisted for a long time. Also they are not ankle grazing on me because I am not a tall model.

I have something similar to your Clarks boots that I would wear with office pants if I ever wore office pants. The last time was for my stepson's high school graduation. I am proud to say that I have not been in a workplace that required office pants since 2015. The problem is that even my "similar to Clarks" shoes are not entirely comfortable. They are just a little tight on one foot.
ReplyDeleteI feel like I can only fully dress up in warm weather when I can wear a dress and nice sandals. Anything that is not a sneaker or a sandal does not meet my shoe comfort threshold of 99.9999999%.
I think your practice of living in the short term future is fine. My failing was the I used to live in the "a few years from now" future at all times, which short changes the present. I promise that someday you will wake up and realize that you cannot remember the last time that you were vomited on. That day will not be today and in fact it won't be for a few more years, but it will happen.
I love your comments Birchie! I feel like dressing for an office is harder now because there isn't even really a "requirement" to dress a certain way... I'm just trying to dress put together, and probably more put together than most of my colleagues. My husband just wears a polo shirt and chinos to his office daily. Ladies clothes are complicated.
DeleteThe brown boots may have to be my go-to. They are not 95% comfortable though, but I'm not sure if that's because they haven't "broken in" yet or because they aren't comfortable. I haven't bought non sneakers in a very long time so I may have forgotten what other shoes feel like...?
I exclusively wear Rothys! They are pointy toed but there are other styles. Although I do not know if they are available in the UK. I like that they are machine washable. They are make from recycled plastic so they are environmentally friendly. And there is no breaking in process - they are comfy from day one! They are pricy, though, probably $150? But they last for quite a while! I have them in navy and black. They are not the most fashionable/fancy shoes, but I just don't care anymore!
ReplyDeleteOMG Rothi's look soo comfortable! They are very £££ here... It looks like they have a shop in London, or possibly a pop-up in a shop? I am glad to know that all my podcasters are steering people right in the shoe world. I also can't believe they are machine washable shoes. Maybe on the list for next time I'm in the states...
DeleteI immediately thought of Lisa and her love for Rothy's!!! They're very expensive in Canada, and harder to get but I am tempted because she makes them sound so wonderful and practical!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE that dress. Clothes shopping is such a drag when you're older. As a teen it was fun: I had time, I had a different body shape. Shopping for clothes was an event. Now it's a chore! But I love that you've found some really versatile pieces for your wardrobe.
Congrats on your milestone. A shoutout from Bradley is amazing! :)
ReplyDeleteI actually love the ankle boots but not sure they go with the trousers, unless they're long enough on you. Maybe the loafers from your last post though.
I second Rothys. They are great, but pricey! However, one pair of black flats is really all you need in life, plus they are pointy so they look nice/fancy, but you can also wear them with jeans and they don't look silly. I also often go to Ross and there are a few brands (Anne Klein for example) that usually have a comfy nice looking black flat that will work. Actually Clarks may have something appropriate too! Good luck!
ReplyDeleteThose shoes are way cool! ‐rachel
ReplyDeleteI have similar boots from Blondo! And I love them. I wear them with dress pants but not the ankle pants. Ankle pants are tough for me since my ankle are thick.
ReplyDeleteBut! A block heel pump is perfect with them imo.
Block heels are sturdy and my feet never hurt when I wear them. For spring, you can get sling backs, too.
