Sunday Update: Reading, Sports, Sleep, Habits

The sun came out this week! Also, these little daffodils came out this week.  This morning it was light while we were eating breakfast.  Spring is coming.

Last year Ezra* wrote the following poem

Spring is here
I can see new life
I can smell flowers

This week had many highlights.  Friends came to visit and we went to our local castle.  We took the babies out to lunch with friends (fun fact, when you have 4 kids and you meet a family of 4 suddenly there are 10 of you looking for a table).  I had moderately good days in work, although did not get as much done as I wanted.  I got a pedicure.  I did evening Pilates with a friend and morning gym with my gym buddy.  I took the babies to toddle around a museum on a super rainy Sunday and they had a great time.  I got to join a virtual Zoom about fitting adventures into one's life and realized that my life currently has a lot of adventure.

Reading

I started The Dictionary Of Lost Words by Pip Williams.  It's not instantly pulling me in but I am enjoying it.  I think I expected something different and more like The Once And Future Witches, which it is not. I think I will get more into this book the more I read it.

I have a backlog of physical books to read (notably Meditations for Mortals) and I am just not reading physicals books.  Kindle is so easy.  Maybe I will make it a goal to read a physical book sometime soon.

Sports

  • Monday
    • 45 Minute 2010's pop Ride with Hannah Frankson
    • 30 Minute Pop Punk Pilates with Kristin Mcgee (and also my evening workout buddy!)
  • Tuesday
    • 20 Minute Soundtrack Strength Club with Callie Gullickson
  • Wednesday
    • 30 Minute 2000's ride with Emma Lovewell
  • Friday
    • 1 hour gym workout with gym buddy
  • Sunday
    • 20 Minute Pop Punk ride with Ally Love
    • 10 Minute Core Strength with Katie Wang
I was supposed to meet my colleague for the 20 minute Ally Love ride live on Thursday but missed it through a series of poor choices.  Then I didn't exercise at all on Thursday, which was also not ideal.

This week I am going to try and get up early to do exercise.  We only have 2 days of childcare and I am working 2.5 days so it's going to be hard to fit in sport, but many people don't have the luxury of lunch time sport so it's time for me to join the world of "many people" and do my exercise in the morning.  Hopefully. If everyone sleeps.

Sleep
I have averaged 7.33 hours which is great.  I woke up before my 6am alarm this morning.  I am still randomly awake at night sometimes, which is annoying, but I am hoping more exercise will fix it.  The biggest great news is that Aubrey and Clara are somewhat reliably sleeping until 6am and sometimes even until 6:30.  I think better times are coming.

Habits
Why is a flossing habit so hard?  On the other hand, my fruit and veg habit is getting better.  And do I even want to be a meditating person?  Apparently not.  Maybe that will be a morning thing.

I have booked a dentist appointment for mid March so I need to keep up my flossing game.  When the dentist asks me how often I floss I consistently say "daily for a few weeks before every dentist appointment".  Or I say "not much" and then I have a unpleasant dentist visit.

Have you had any adventures recently?  Do you eat fruit every day?

*I have decided to do the bloggy thing and use different names for the kids.  So if you thought my kids had different names before, then you are right.  I know it's a weird transition, but I am hoping to be a bloggy person for a long time and someday my kids may be less interested in all the stuff I've written about them.  So for now we will have Ezra, Lily, Clara and Aubrey.  I am also working on not using "the twins" or "the babies" as much because they are two people so it should be "Clara and Aubrey" going forward.

  1. I'm not sure what to suggest for flossing. On the one hand, you do it a few times a week so is that good enough? But I guess if your dentist can tell when you skip it, then it seems like it's worth keeping after. Would it help to floss before you brush?

When I first started writing about my family, I considered giving everyone fake names, or a fake initial, but I soon realized that there were too many people to keep track of, so that's when I went with numbering. It feels clunky when I write about dinner with SIL#1 and BIL#3, but at least I know who I'm talking about. Also numbering doesn't work well for all of the nieces and nephews because there are so many of them. Sigh, it is what it is.

    1. I wrote pretty unclearly there... they seem not to notice that I just floss before a dentist visit so that's probably why I'm not super encouraged to floss on the regular. However, that might be less likely to continue as I get older, and also it's been a year since I saw the dentist so I may be worse than expected. I am trying to mix up the flossing now since my dentist appt is in 3 weeks and I know it's going to be bad if I don't keep up my habits.

I like how you write your family names! I've definitely found it easy to follow as a blog reader, although I don't really track them post to post but it's easy to red in the narrative of a single post.

  2. So funny, when you said the twins names I was like, wait, did I forget their names or am I going crazy or what? Then I kept reading and got it, but woof you had me confused for sure! Did you go back and retroactively change them? When I first started writing, I used real names and maybe a year or so later I decided to go to nicknames, and I went back and changed the old ones.

I think for flossing, floss stick is the answer. Keep it in your pocket, or in a bowl on the kitchen table or your desk or whatever, and after each meal just give your teeth a few pokes and you are done. Then if you miss some on one go around, you will hopefully get it on one of the others. I am telling you. Also, I used to keep a pack in the car, one in my purse and a "current" one in my fanny pack. No joke. Now I have one in my fanny pack, one wherever I have lunch and a lot of extras in my bathroom bag.

    1. I have not changed any names in the past. I figured the best time to start was 3 years ago and the second best time was now. I think I would rather take down the whole blog than go back and change names, so I'l leave it there for now.

OK I think you might be onto something with the floss pick. I've added that to my shopping list!

  3. I thought about giving my kids names on my blog, but I just refer to them by their ages, which I think might get confusing and make it look like I have six kids. I mean some days it feels that way. Oh well, I don't know that any internet strangers are that invested in my life that they track who all my kids are, or that it's so important that I'd risk the kid's privacy. I have started feeling a little iffy on putting pictures of the kids on my blog... still trying to think about how I feel about that one. I mean the 13 year old loves it, which I think might be a little concerning.
Flossing is a lot of work. Maybe you need to tie it to another part of your routine? I used to be good about flossing and then I started brushing my teeth with the kids and they don't floss so I always forget as well. But something is better than nothing, right? Three times a week is a habit?

    1. Yeah I go back and forth but I realized while it's no problem putting names up now, it might be weirder 5 or 10 years from now, so I may as well start using different names now. I left facebook when I thought I might want to have a baby because I didn't want to decide whether to put pictures of a baby on facebook. I still intend to put pictures of the kids up, so it probably doesn't change much.

Flossing worked great when I did it while the big kids brush their teeth. But then I switched to twin bedtime instead and didn't floss. I think I'm getting there though. Unfortunately I'll have to defer to Mrs. dentist about whether three times a week is enough of a habit...
