Monday Update - Reading, Sports, Sleep, Habits

I missed a Sunday update.  Oops!

This week I crammed a 5 day workweek into 2.5 days.  100% don't recommend.  It's way easier to take a week off work than to take a Monday, Friday, and 1/2 day Tuesday off work.

It was school holidays, so on Monday I watched all the kids (for some of it).  I took our 4 kids to a playdate with a family of 6 kids and it was great.  Although I have no desire to have 6 kids (we are 4 no more) I can see it's very different when the age range is 13-11-9-6-5-2.  We didn't want a big gap between kids, but 6-4-1-1 is pretty small.  Seeing older kids does make me more excited for 10-8-5-5.  But, I am not wishing life away.  Life is good.

Tuesday we had friends visit in the afternoon for a park adventure.  Wednesday and Thursday were work days.  Friday we took the big kids out to lunch, and it was Ezra's first time having lunch at a restaurant (I think? Or maybe second?) and he was pretty excited about the coloring
On Saturday we took a family trip to Costco.  In addition to 5 £1.50 hot dogs we got 2 dozen bagels and 12 croissants.  I don't think costco croissants are great but also, you can't go wrong with 12 for £5.49.

(Side note -would you rather have 12 really average croissants for £5.49 or one really good croissant for £4?)

It was only upon reviewing this costco photo that I realized Lily was wearing a spider man onesie for the whole shopping trip.

On Saturday afternoon I got out for a trail run! The sun came out, it wasn't cold, and I even wore a hat.  I ran just over 4 miles and I am keen to be out more.

My 12 year old trail shoes may be reaching end of life

Reading
I'm not reading a lot right now and I'm worried I'm going to lose my loan of The Dictionary of Lost Words before I finish.  Need to just sit down and read.

I got a hardcover copy of All The Money In The World.
I will add this to the pile of paper books I'm not currently reading either.  I got it second hand because I don't think this book was actually published in the UK, but I found it on an online charity shop.  I tend to have a "I can buy a book I want from a charity shop for £5 or less" rule.

I am still looking for a copy of Build The Life You Want from a online second hand book store but I haven't seen it for £5 or less yet.
Sports
I did a decent amount of sport this week.  I've gotten bored of my own summary.  I am still super enjoying Peloton. I've been working on more Strength classes and enjoying using my new 10kg weights.

At the gym my friend asked me how much I can deadlift and I know it is at least 21.5 kg because Clara is 10kg and Aubrey is 11.5kg. Although I guess I usually lift them from a squat so I'm sure I can deadlift more than that.

Lifting things and getting stronger is fun.

Sleep
Oh internet friends I averaged 7.7 hours of sleep which is a definite max since probably 2022.  It was great.  I'm not getting up in the morning early enough for morning routine and me time, but I go to bed around 9:30 and wake up around 5:30 and it's working and it's great.

I'm wondering if every metric, every tracking adventure, and perhaps every mood I have is purely related to how much sleep I got the night before.  It might be that the secret to happiness is literally sleep.  Maybe.

Habits
I am happy to report that my flossing habit is improving.  I decided I will floss when the kids brush their teeth.  I can't brush my teeth when the kids brush their teeth (it just, doesn't work) but I can floss while they brush.  I have a dentist appt in 2 weeks and hopefully this one month effort will be worth it.  And maybe it will even stay on as a good habit!

I did 12 strength sessions in Feb, which brings me to 22 for the first 2 months of the year.  My goal was 100 this year so I am doing well.

And that's another week gone.  It's so nice to not recoil in horror at the idea of the kids being off school for a week.  Younger kids were very hard.  Slightly older kids are slightly less hard.  Next week everyone is back in school and I am back in a 5 day workweek.  Boring life.  I like it.

Do you shop at Costco? What's your favourite Costco find? Would you rather have 12 really average croissants for £5.49 or one really good croissant for £4? Do you like the £1.50 all beef hot dog or the £1.95 slice of pizza?

  1. Of course I shop at Costco! It's one of my great pleasures in life. My absolute favorite is that once in a while they have really good clothes.

Now look, obviously I would prefer the really good croissant, but I would also be happy with the Costco croissants. Both of these options are better than no croissants. Would you believe that we've only gotten their pizza once and never had a hot dog? Maybe if the kids had been smaller when we joined.

Yay for the boring life! Just wait until your kids are older and more self sufficient. It's pretty sweet.

    1. I did not actually know the hot dogs were a thing until my brother introduced me to them. and at the same time he introduced the kids to them. So, now they know about the hot dogs and we are a hot dog family. In general I am a "yuck £1.50 hot dog" person but now i'm a "go on then, £1.50 costco hot dog" person.

Top tip on the clothes! I've never looked in that isle!

  2. I love the Spiderman outfit. Perfect Costco attire.

I go to Costco as infrequently as possible, so when I do I buy a ton of stuff and am so exhausted and crabby that I cannot bear the thought of sitting in the food court to eat a hotdog or slice of pizza.

    1. Thank you! And yes, I totally get you on the food court. I think I liked the hot dog this time because we ate them at home. I figured hot dogs are wrapped in foil so they will be fine on a 20 minute drive.

  3. Flossing: I am trying what amounts to a sticker chart to get myself to floss. Every day that I floss, I get to color in a little bubble on a "daily habits" sticky note. It is embarrassingly motivating. I want my sticker! -rachel

    1. I think we have reached an age where we can really enjoy our own sticker charts. 100% approve

  4. Yay on your sleep and exercise and everything! Well done you!

We are a small family of 3, so a big Costco container of croissants would never happen here. If I had a big family to feed, I would go that route happily. But for me? I won't even buy the croissants at the local French bakery because it doesn't taste like the croissants in France. (There are plenty of other pastries that I will eat that don't make me sad that I'm not in France, so I'll eat those instead.)

I am newish to Costco, I didn't realize that I could manage to get things that are small enough for our little place, but now that I'm a member, I go and buy olive oil and artificial sweetener, and the lamb prices are excellent too. I had a hot dog there once and it was OK. There's a local chain here that has better ones, so if I wanted a hot dog, I would go there.

    1. That is a fair point about croissants! Maybe I need to avoid trying french ones so as not to ruin my subpar ones..

We get the avocado oil and I bet the olive oil is good. Interesting about the lamb! I love hearing what other people get there, it's such a random store.

  5. I love Costco, and even brought my Costco card with me on my bike trip, even though I probably could not carry most of the items on my bike. However, they do have an excellent snack aisle, but I would have to really commit to that specific snack! When I was living in a house, I often bought their Greek yogurt, almond milk, cereal...the list goes on, but my favorite aisle is the snack aisle, which always gets me in trouble. Oh! They also have some really good meat prices, and I used to buy a double pork butt and freeze one and make one into carnitas. I miss that. I actually never go to the food court, but I am fairly certain I may have once had a slice of pizza back in the day, but never a hot dog.

Oh and definitely one good French croissant over twelve Costco ones.
