Bank Holiday Weekend

Now *that* was a bank holiday weekend!

On Friday I went out to dinner with my mom friends, to a tapas restaurant.  We vastly over ordered.  I am super basic and I love Patatas Bravas.  Spice and potato is my friend.

On Saturday we had a family play date with friends we have been trying to see for ages.  Our kids are roughly the same ages and they played together so well.  Family play dates are the best.  In the afternoon we ate scones (savory and sweet!) and watched the coronation.  So many lovely hates!

On Sunday Andy went biking in the morning and Isaac and Lilah played so well at home.  Is 3 and 5 going to be a magic age of playing?  I got house stuff done while watching kids, which is a total anomaly for me.  I also made a massive task list of to-dos for the afternoon.  In the afternoon Lilah took a nap and Isaac went to Grandma's house and we finally got house chores done.

So many house chores.  We now have three bags ready to go to the charity shop, and a sofa, a Roomba, and a Kallax listed on gumtree.  If they don't sell in a week the sofa can get picked up by the furniture charity shop.

We also assembled Lilah's toddler bed in an attempt to transition from her crib.  She was so happy but has so far not slept in it and instead slept in her crib.  I hate sleep transitions.  It is not my strong suit.  I love the idea of kids sharing rooms but on Saturday (and Sunday) she ended up back in her crib.  Isaac stayed in a crib until nearly 3, so maybe I just have crib-loving kids.

On Monday we took the kids to Soft Play, which they loved.  Isaac has been to soft play when he was little but because of Covid it was all closed or super when Lilah was 0-1 and she hasn't been much.  They both loved it and ran for 90 minutes straight.

Our friends visited from Bristol and we all came back for lunch, which I managed to smash out that morning.  I made a quiche!  Quiche is such an easy make-ahead lunch food for short notice lunches. We also had the Oh She  Glows Chickpea salad, which is also a super winner and I need to make more often.  In the afternoon we all took naps (ie, even our friends) and then did some playing in the house before having home made pizza.

This week is a short week due to the bank holiday.  I still need to list my road bike on Gumtree and actually take the charity stuff to the charity shop, but I feel our house is progressing towards order again.  Which is good.

Also, this morning I was listening to Cal Newport's Deep Questions and was SO EXCITED to hear Sarah Hart Unger as a guest!  It's a long episode but great so far, and exactly what I needed to listen to on a time when my planning has gone a bit off kilter.

How was your weekend? What is your favourite quick and easy lunch share?  Do you prefer savory scones (like cheese?) or sweet scones (like berry?)

  1. Okay, I always get confused because if I remember correctly, English scones are like American biscuits? And if that is the case, than put some gravy on it (so, to answer your question -- team savory here!) The other one that I was surprised about was crumpets (do you even eat those) and the fact that they seemed like pancakes (more so than American "English muffins") to me, and for those I would put jam on them. Now, if we are talking about American scones, I could go either way! Bacon, fruit...bacon AND fruit! I am a fan no matter what you put in it!

My weekend was great; I recorded the coronation but have not watched it yet. I went to an Earthquakes game on Saturday which was good (they won, it was sunny) but seems extremely disorganized, then I went to a Giants game on Sunday which was good (it was sunny, I got sunburned, they lost) and reminded me of how fun it is to go to a game in the middle of the day! All in all it was a great weekend!

    1. It is confusing! I think American biscuits are more buttery and flakey than scones. But then, I could totally eat american biscuits with bacon or gravy or eggs, but I probably wouldn't want to add chocolate chips to an american biscuit.

we LOVE crumpets. the kids especially. We like sourdough ones. They are a bit like pancakes... definitely not like english muffins. Which we also eat a lot of. To be honest, we love all bread products from every side of the pond.

Your weekend sounds awesome! Getting sunburned at a giants game is a total win. I do miss american sports living over here - I loved living in Portland because of the minor league baseball scene. So fun!

  2. This does sound like a wonderful holiday weekend! How nice that the kids are starting to play together. That's the siblings dream, right? Your successful family play date makes me want to set one up soon -- they are so fun! Have a great short week!

    1. Definitely set up a play date soon! I don't know why everyone was on such good form but it went so well this weekend. I can't believe the week is half over already :-)

  3. My kids are 3 and 5, too!! I have to give them credit- they have reached that stage where they play together without asking for attention. It's glorious. Of course, they fight and argue, then cry and hug, but s'all good. I told them-only call me or dad when you can't solve the problem on your own.

Been also trying to get rid of stuff. We had a pack'n'play for years in the closet, wanting to sell it FB market place, then just put it out on the curb- gone in two hours. We have a rocking horse that they don't play with anymore so I want to get rid of but we'll see how that will go...

    1. Oh is 3 and 5 a magic age? Mine are 2 and 4 but turning 3 and 5 in September/October.

Good luck with the rocking horse! I always wanted one in theory but I know we don't have room for it. I think with kids toys it's really hard to figure out when kids have really grown out of something vs. just not playing with something for a while

When I visited my family in California they got a free pack and play from a friend but then had so much trouble getting rid of it. Apparently thrift stores wouldn't take it. Curbside give-aways are such a win for that type of stuff. Good luck with your declutter too.

  4. Chickpea salad is amazing. My favorite part about it is that you *can* use a recipe but it's amazing no matter how you make it. I love it on a sandwich with pickled onions and avocado. Quiche is always a winner as well.

  5. I am kind of a picky eater, and when we were in Spain some years back, to my embarrassment, I found that a lot of the tapas had ingredients/ stuff I didn't really like!!! I leaned into the patatas bravas as well. ;) Safe and very yummy.

I also loved hearing SHU on Deep Questions yesterday. Listened on my flight home from Texas after a bout with food poisoning, so I was not up for reading or screens. I sat with my Airpods in just listening with my eyes closed for the whole flight and it was great.

    1. Ahh I was so surprised and excited to hear her! I'm glad you got to listen to it on a flight, but food poisoning on/before a flight sounds awful. Yuck. Hope you have recovered.

  6. We basically just do snacks for lunch. Pretzels and guac, a handful of nuts, and maybe a slice of cheese. Veggies on the side! That's it. That's what we do every day.

I like all scones. Sweet or savory. If you put in front of me, I will eat it!

    1. Oh yum! I think I would eat a thousand calories of pretzel and guac if it was in front of me. Sounds healthy and delicious for those who graze though!
