Monday Musings from a Train

Currently on the train from London after a very busy day in the London office.  Had a job interview, which was a good but nerve wracking experience.  I'm hoping that my nerves indicate that I'm actually reaching in my career in a way I haven't before. Plus, how cool is it that I can forever say I interviewed for a job at 5 months pregnant? I usually love interviews, but at the start of this one I had somewhat full blown imposter syndrome.  Oh well, we will see how it goes.  Even if I don't get invited to the next stage I'll be keen to hear feedback so I can become better at interviews going forward.

Yesterday Andy and I ordered a tumble drier and I cannot wait to wash and dry clothes on the same day.  It's been raining lots and I haven't hung laundry outside in months which means I'm on a constant cycle of laundry airers and fans and open and shut windows.

We brought most of the baby stuff from storage and shoved it in the baby room.  I still need to unpack it and organize it.  So much stuff.  Two bouncers.  I did tell Andy this is the last time we are moving this baby stuff - the next time we move it will be to whoever is getting it next.

Interlude: the people on the train table behind me are watching TV out loud.  On the one hand I know I should be empathetic because kids and trains and whatnot but also, if you're going to be family of children watching ipads can you not also be family of children with headsets to watch ipads?

I don't have any plans with the kids tomorrow.  Tuesdays off are a bit odd - as Suzanne pointed out in a comment it's like having double Mondays.  I keep thinking I should go somewhere far away (like, an hour) but also I am at a loss about where to go.  We had an amazing local farm but it's closed for renovations.  It's supposed to be closed until early spring... but it's apparently closed until spring 2025.

The unplanned weekend went surprisingly OK.  Saturday Andy took Isaac to a kids birthday party while my mom watched Lilah and I worked on my interview presentation.  Saturday afternoon Andy took a nap and then assembled some more IKEA.  On Sunday he wasn't feeling well and tried to run a 10k before abandoning because he was actually somewhat ill.  So he did more sleeping and then we picked up all the baby stuff from storage.  I washed my hair, picked out my interview outfit (becasue there was no hiding my pregnancy). and we both fell asleep at 8:30pm, which was good because I was still tired for the 5am alarm.

London days are long days.

  1. It does sound like a long day. But congrats on getting through your interview! Sending you all the good vibes.

I am always so fascinated by people who watch TV out loud in public situations (or people who FaceTime in public situations, or talk on speakerphone). They must truly feel like it doesn't bother other people, and in the latter case they must not care about broadcasting their personal business. So interesting!

  3. Congrats on your interview!

People who listen to media out loud in public places, particularly enclosed public places like public transit, deserve their own special bad place in the afterlife.

  4. Congrats on completing the interview; you've done your part in the process!! And I love how you're framing the feedback side of things - if you don't get the job, this will still be such a valuable experience for the future. Looking forward to updates.

Poor Andy - hope he's feeling better soon. When you said he was ill I basically cued ominous music in my head thinking of your whole family getting sick, so I'm VERY glad that hasn't happened and am sending all the healthy vibes your way <3

    1. Thank you! Luckily it was just Andy who got sick - the kids and I managed to avoid it. I really think that middle/late pregnancy gives me weird super immunity... until I do catch something and it just takes me out.

  5. Fingers crossed you get the part!!

Re listening to your phone/iPad out loud, I am very firmly not a fan. I don't care if it is a movie, music, Facetime or a phone call - I do not need to hear it. I think you should keep it to yourself. Did you know that in DC there is a quiet car on the commuter Amtrak train? Now if we could only get them to instigate that in all trains, busses, restaurants and walking trails, I would be a happy camper.

Oh, on a side note, I was in the lunchroom at work and this lady was on Facetime on speaker while toasting a bagel in the common lunchroom, and I had to actually walk around (behind) her to go and get my lunch and I could see the person and I felt kind of awkward (as well as annoyed) to have to be part of her private coversation!

    1. I find people facetiming in public soooo weird! Like, should I say hi and pretend this person is in the room (probably not, but it wouldn't be any more weird than facetiming in public!)

  6. Ugh, I have NO experience with job interviews but every time someone shares their experiences, I am like "why does it have to be such a dreadful thing to get a job? Why do you have to upsell yourself to others?"... As you know, I am not good at that stuff and I will forever come back here to learn from you.

    1. I think sometimes being in a job is also dreadful, we just fear the new job more than the current situation. But yes, job hunting is the worst, and way worse for people who aren't great at promoting themselves and bigging themselves up... both of which are definitely both learned skills and easier for certain people (and certain genders!) than others. And not necessarily skills that make people a better employee either... which makes the whole interview process even weirder.
