Some July Things So Far

Things that are good so far this month:

Books: I finished Daisy Jones and the Six.  That made for a very good audiobook.  Next I have Colin Joust's A Very Punchable Face.  I'm not sure where this recommendation came from. I really liked Daisy Jones so I don't really want to start this one but also... it's good to not want every book to be a TJR book.

TV/Film: Andy and I watched a movie!  It was on my yearly goals to watch a movie.  We saw Weird (The Al Yankovic) story and really enjoyed it.  Then over the last two nights we watched The Glass Onion and I liked that one too.  I think watching movies over 2 or 3 nights is actually nicer than watching a TV show - we don't have any shows on the "To Watch" list right now.  We finished Shrinking (cute!) and now... I don't know what to watch next.  I want to see Everything Everywhere All At Once but I can't find it free on any streaming service we have and apparently that precludes me watching a film.

House Projects: I ordered a new laundry basket! And new stacking bowls! I've also picked out a new kitchen bin but haven't made the order yet.  This weekend andy mounted a new shelf in the kids room, I put up some art which belonged in Isaac's room and not the baby room, and I put up hooks in the kids costume area.

Work: I am not as focused in work as I should be.  I think the problem is summer.  People are on holiday.  I want to be on holiday.  I'm hoping to get caught up on things and then maybe 2 or 3 days off either this week or next.

Clothes/Decluttering: I have been selling things on Vinted - mostly maternity clothes I don't/wont wear.  I've been buying more on Vinted... mostly kids things.  Although relatively cheap, it's still bringing stuff into my house so I have to be careful not to get too many things.  I always have a declutter box out ready to go to the charity shop and am pretty good about filling it - I just need to take it soon as it's getting pretty full.

Clothes: How did I live without a tumble drier for so many years?  I am now able to do a whole load of laundry in one day!  I can see how people manage capsule wardrobes if they can get clothes clean this quickly.  I find maternity wear to basically be a capsule wardrobe but I have 2 work appropriate tops (good thing I only go to the office once a week, at most) and these can't be dried.  So I feel like i'm on a pretty strict wash/dry/repeat cycle.  I have 11 weeks left of pregnancy (at most) so I'm hesitant to buy any more maternity clothes, but I am also worried that 5 shirts may not cut it for 11 weeks.

  1. I listened to A Punchable Face on audio a few years ago. I don't watch SNL and I had no reference for who he was, but the book was great.

I'm a big fan of watching a movie over the course of a few nights during the week. There are only so many TV shows but one million movies.

Between the fact that everyone is on vacation and I'm going to be quitting my job at the end of the month...yeah not super productive. And yet somehow I get everything done that needs to get done.

  2. I don't watch movies very much, but I'm completely on board with you that they must be free and it's better to watch them in chunks rather than in one sitting. I think they should bring intermissions back to movie theaters!

I have six dresses that I rotate all summer long. That's it. I have a skirt or two and can usually scrounge up another outfit if I can't do laundry at least every six days, but it works out for me. I think you should try to last without buying anymore clothing! People give a lot of leniency for pregnant folks and there's no reason to spend money on something with such a short shelf life!

    1. Same on the summer dresses! Makes things so much easier. A few tees plus two pairs of shorts and that’s it!

    3. Thank you for the motivation! I think I can make it 11 more weeks with what I have... especially because I don't foresee leaving the house that much at the end of pregnancy... it turns out I am actually outgrowing maternity clothes (twins, akk!) and I get a feeling October will be a 90% pyjamas month.

  3. I couldn't live without a dryer. I boarded with someone that air dried everything and it was...HARD. I want to see Weird!

I thought Glass Onion was fine, but definitely preferred Knives Out (the first in that series - have you seen it? If not, I found it very entertaining!)

    1. I saw Knives out too and liked that. I liked both of them. I think I had high expectations of knives out and low expectations of glass onion, and in memory I liked them both about the same. Which probably means knives out is better.

  4. Hooray for your dryer! Definitely a modern convenience I am very thankful for.

I will be interested in your thoughts about A Very Punchable Face. I listened to it a few years ago and liked it -- I like Colin Jost from SNL, and like him more after listening to his memoir. But there are some parts of it that were just gross!

  5. I haven't watched a whole movie in ages. I am intrigued by some that made it to the movie theaters lately, but I am probably going to wait until they're available to stream so I can watch on my own time and at my own pace.

And yes, we do a lot of line drying but a dryer is definitely nice for some things.

  6. Do you have a buy nothing group in your area? Are you on Facebook? If I were you, if you are not on Facebook, I think I might join FB just to become part of a local buy nothing group. That would be a great place to procure maternity clothes quickly and for free, and then you could give them away again when you are finished with them. I see a lot of maternity clothes and kids clothes on ours.

    1. I think the buy nothing groups tend to need watching to get things, I've not joined it so far. I only signed up to facebook so I could join a twin group which I haven't used much. I think i will just try to go without - I use vinted a lot which is pretty cheap (I got 6 maternity shirts for £7). I have a big pile of baby clothes for the charity shop so I don't mind buying from there if there's anything I need too.

  7. It’s funny- I’ve started hanging my clothes to dry- just my clothes. Everyone else’s stuff still goes in the dryer. I’m not sure why I’m doing this… It started as an experiment because I read it was better for clothes and then I realized I was more likely to fold and put away my clothes quickly because the clothes rack is truly an eye sore. The stuff from the dryer just sits.
I’ve always been fascinated by a capsule wardrobe. Some weeks when I’m really busy I will preplan my clothes for the week and it makes me realize that I really don’t need that many things. It’s definitely easier in the summer, I find, because I can just throw on a dress. Winter layering and pants… so many more decisions to make!

  8. Decluttering is such a never-ending job. It is a love-hate relationship. It feels good when done but there is always stuff to do. I also have a huge box - not let's be honest 3 boxes – I need/want to sell. This will be something to do this fall.
I probably would try not to buy anymore maternity clothes if you can manage. But then you should feel comfortable.
