Halloween recap 2024: One year old twins are far less spooky than newborn ones.

Halloween 2023.  Waiting to take these two tiny things home.
They were born on the 30th at 8pm and I was promised I only had to stay in hospital for 24 hours.  [This is not because I am some awesome person who wants babies at home, this is because I was on a 6 person ward with 7 babies.  And the food was terrible.]

We got home by 9pm, to a post halloween street and a post-halloween house.

Then, I didn't sleep for 6-8 months [slight overstatement]

Onwards.... and upwards?  Halloween 2024:

So much orange.

It's half term in the UK, so the kids are off school and I decided to take a few days off 9-5 holiday paid work.  We went to a friend's house for halloween activities in between the babies morning and afternoon naps.  Another friend came by for a kid play date during afternoon nap.  The kids drew spooky pictures.

Our neighbor invited us for a drinks and nibbles party from 4pm.  We showed up at 4:45 and were the first people there, then we left at 5:10 because we have so many kids, and no one else had come yet either.  In a former world I would have felt awkward about this. However, they have kids too (although older than ours).  Someone has to be the first person to a party.  And also, we have so many small kids and of course we were going to be early.  I've decided we do people a favour by being the first, and also by leaving early, we are the official party starters AND we get out of the way quickly so the actual party can start.  Andy calls our presence "tranquility as a service" because when we leave a space the tranquility of not having four small kids around is highly noticeable.

Halloween is not a super big deal over here, and trick or treating is relatively new as well.  We have a very decorated halloween house so we did get a lot of trick or treaters. We have out oranges colored like pumpkins, and no one threw them at our house which was nice.

The kids came home for a quick dinner (sausage mac and cheese) and then we met up with a family of 3 kids (ages 10/7/5, to match with our 6/4/1/1) and all went out trick or treating together.
It was Isaac and Lilah's first time trick or treating and they had an absolute blast.  We only knocked on doors of very decorated houses, and the kids got a manageable amount of candy.  Still more than any human should eat, so I am wondering whether we try and buy it off them for lego or a craft book.
Lilah's candy haul

We were all back by 6:45, babies asleep by 7, kids asleep by 7:15, me asleep by 8:15 with 8 solid hours of sleep.

I enjoyed this halloween a lot more than last year.

Did you have a good halloween?  Do you like halloween?  What's your favourite halloween candy?  Mine is a Reeses Peanut Cup Pumpkins, or anything Reeses Peanut Butter Cup.  I have zero interest in sugar sweets.

  1. Oh my goodness - the newborn pic is soooo sweet. I can't believe it has been a year, but I'm sure your brain and body can feel all 365 days of having two infants in the house!

I also like Reese's PB halloween shapes (they're thicker so you get more peanut butter). I wasn't home for Halloween, but I will definitely be asking for a few of my favourite chocolates from the kids when I get home.

  2. I agree with Elisabeth your newborn baby phot is so cute. I bet it's been loud in your house ever since. I like showing up first at a party (even not having kids) because you actually have the chance to talk a few sentences with the host:ess before everyone arrives.

I am not a fan of halloween. You may even say I am a halloween grinch.

  3. I am amazed at how big the girls are, even though I have been here the whole time! All the kids look very cute. I see full sized Haribo bags in that haul! Count me in! They are one of my favorite snacks, although I am not a huge candy eater. My Dad used to buy the candy from us when we were kids and I was much happier having money than candy.

  4. The oranges decorated like pumpkins! PERFECT!

I love Halloween and feel like it's better than Christmas because there's no need for gifts or traveling to see relatives or cards. It's just fun.

  5. I used to decorate oranges like that for my daughter's lunchbox on Halloween. It embarrassed her because kids would comment and she was self-conscious. To be clear, their comments were GOOD, she just hated the attention. And she never told me, so I kept doing it. Also dyed her milk orange and put stickers on the outside of the clear milk sippy cup whatever thing, and one year I went beyond, and got a plastic glove and stuffed it with popcorn, and glued black fingernails on it, so it looked like a witches hand. I think she finally told me to cut it out that year. Now she looks back and thinks it was sweet.

Happy 1st birthday to your beautiful twins! I love the pictures, all of them.

  7. Oh, your four kids in all the orange... what a sweet pic. I am glad you had a nice Halloween and I love that you had "mini pumpkins" (aka nectarines) as a treat. So cute!

My favorite halloween candy are the mini twix. :)

  8. I have BIG interest in sugar sweets. Or, sugar anything. It's sad.
Our Halloween was awesome albeit T was lamenting that he didn't build a new prop for the house this year- didn't have time. Me: "we have enough props" Him: "never enough in my book" lol
You've had quite a year, congratulations. Hugs from New Jersey.
