Sunday Update: Reading, Sports, Sleep

Here is a glimpse into twin toddler life at 8am on a Saturday
I just wanted to do the dishes.

This week felt scattered.  On Monday in work I thought "well it makes sense I feel so disjointed, I was off work last week!" but then I realized I was not off work last week. It's probably a bad sign when one feels disjoined from a week off one didn't have.

I had family visiting last weekend, which meant days were busy and evenings were spent chatting and catching up, which is great but also I did not hit my 9:15 in bed goal on any weekend days.

On the plus side, we visited our favourite local castle.  The ceiling is spectacular, and the kids enjoyed admiring it

Andy and I went to dinner at a friend house and had a grown up meal on Saturday! Do you know what is nice? Not shoving an entire meal down in 15 minutes while chaotically feeding babies at the same time and saying "Sit down Nora" every three seconds and having water dumped on you.  We started dinner at 7:15 and finished around 8:30 and it was glorious to talk and eat slowly.  However 2.5 glasses of wine and a 10pm arrival home made for a very tired Sunday.

Reading
There a chance that The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches is a bit too twee.  I am not reading it as fast as I would normally read a book I'm into.  I am still enjoying it, but I'm not feeling drawn to read it.  It has a great premise and good characters and I wonder if a better editor would have made it into a 5* read?

I've owned a Peloton for 3 months now and I am so enjoying it.  I was not sure if I would still enjoy it once I bought it and I do.  I think that Peloton solved my exactly fitness problem, which was that I basically only have 1 hour or less to exercise and it wasn't enough time to leave the house.  I can fit in a ride during lunch and be back at my home office 45 minutes later.  On Saturday I put the babies to sleep and saw there was a live ride in 4 minutes and got changed and rode 20 minutes and felt SO GOOD after.  I know i'm so twee but I'm having a lot of fun with the Peloton - possibly even more fun than I expected.

Sleep
I've averaged 7 hours a night this week.  I am trying to be in bed by 9:15.  It can't happen during evening workout days (once a week), but it is possible more than I actually do it.  10pm seems like such an adult "asleep" time... but I don't know where I get that number from?

If I'm awake past 10pm I feel like it's a very late night.  Going to bed at 8:30 seems very early.  What time is adult bedtime? I do like to read for 30ish minutes, which I don't usually do if I get in bed at 9:15 because then it's already close to 10 and I ideally want to be asleep before 10 so I'll often give up reading at 9:30 and fall asleep.  I had a goal to be "in bed by 9" but I basically never succeeded (because obviously that means "on the way to bed by 8:45) whereas I've been a bit better at "in bed by 9:15" (because that means getting ready for bed at 9)

Habits
I have stolen Kae's habit template and I like tracking habits! I've also tracked food for a week or two now which is interesting because it turns out I don't eat enough fruit or vegetables.  I barely eat any fruit.  Fruit is probably good for me.

I also fell off the meditation bandwagon immediately upon tracking it.  And I am fairly sure I did more flossing than this but forgot to track it (sorry for the dental hygiene TMI)

Oh and in more exciting news - daily planning got checked today because I got my Sprouted Daily Planner!   I am so excited to have a daily planner again.  I'm not as instantly in love as I was with Erin Condren, and I am still sad to say bye to the Ashley Shelley Daily that was discontinued this year, but I am excited to see how this planner work for me. I am a simple person who apparently cannot do daily planning on anything but spiral bound.

Do people really floss every day? Do you track things? What time is your bedtime? What time do you think a normal adult bedtime is?  Do you think your bedtime is early or late or just right?

  1. I floss...5/7 days? I feel like that's good enough? My daughter has a waterpik and I think I should invest in one, but I've been too lazy and/or cheap.

I don't tend to track nearly as many things as I used to - right now I'm tracking my period (via Oura ring), sleep (Oura ring), and when I go to the gym or workout at home (I only record what type - W = walk, R = run, Y = yoga, S = strength).

I have a Sprouted Weekly Planner and I love it. SHU actually gave me my first one and I've been in love with it every since, but I know that planners are SOOOO user-specific. I hope you come to find it works for you.

My bedtime is a range. Ideally I'd have lights out by 10:30, but it ranges from 9:30-11:00 if I'm being honest. It's much more variable now that the kids are older and have events later in the evenings.

    1. I added period tracking and it's... enlightening. Or more precisely, I know exactly why I'm so annoyed at everyone right now. So maybe it's just annoying haha. I tried a waterpik and I don't really like it, which is a shame becasue it was $$$. Everyone raves about them.

I think a 9:30 to 11:00 bedtime range sounds perfect, especially with slightly bigger kids. I am scared of evening events!

Also I am sure I found sprouted planner from you and I am so happy with it so far - thank you!

  2. Normally I floss 6 days a week. I always skip Saturday and I also don't bring floss with me when I travel so at this point I have not flossed in a week - tomorrow night I'll be back home.

We go to bed between 10:30 to 11 on weeknights. Sadly my sleep was total crap this week - I had trouble getting to sleep, and then woke at 2 and at 4 every night and was up for a while so it was pretty brutal. I have no idea why it happened but my body just didn't like sleep this week. I got caught up this weekend so hopefully I'll move back into good sleep from here. Ouch, it was so brutal.

    1. I hope you had better sleep this week! Not sleeping after getting sleep IS brutal. And not sleeping for no reason is extra brutal. C'mon body - you've been sleeping for years - figure it out!

  3. I loved my Erin Condrin planner! However, it was a bit expensive and also was my planner during my transition to online and so after her, I basically tried a few others but never really went back to paper planners. But that Erin Condrin was my favorite!

I floss with a floss pick after every meal. Unfortunately I have come to that stage in my dental life. Not that I am diligent, but mostly because I have a couple of different teeth pockets that get everything caught in them! It is annoying. I have not used real floss, like in a spool, for a long time!

    1. Oh it makes me happy you had an Erin Condren planner! I recently threw out my last Erin Condren and even as a not-very-arty person I still thought it was so pretty as well as being so functional.

Floss pick is very diligent! I bet the dental stakes are a lot higher when traveling - you probably don't want to be ending up in a dentists chair in a foreign country trying to explain tooth ache.

    2. Actually there are surprisingly some great dentists abroad! There are a lot of US people who drive over to Mexico to get dental work, and I plan on going when I am in Turkey to get my annual exam done!

  4. I love that you love your Pelaton so much! I've never tried one, we have zero room for one, but everyone I know who has one loves it.

I tried tracking some things for a while in January but I got bored with it and quit. I thought I was going to be SO INTO IT. Nope. I have an old school Franklin Planner (pocket size, so very small) that shows a month at a time. I have them going back to about 2000. I keep track of my exercise there, but that's about it. And I'm not very specific about it, like if my yoga video is 20 minutes or 40 minutes, I don't track that, just 'yoga'.

I'd like to say that I floss every day, but I'd be lying. I floss more days than I don't.

    1. Aww it's funny that you can track workouts and not other things! I get into tracking stuff for a whil eand usually stop. I do the same with my yoga/stretching - my 90 minute hot yoga ticks the same box as a 5 minute stretch.

Flossing more days than you don't is probably a very good goal!
