5 on a Friday

Babies: the internet tells me that 6 weeks old is peak crying. I hope so. There is a lot of crying now.  The internet says 6 weeks is a growth spurt and they do lots of eating. They are definitely doing lots of eating now. I hope the internet is right.  In the meantime I’m even less mobile than I was last week (which was not very mobile)

Hannukah it’s Hannukah! I managed to get 8 presents for each kid, plus 3 combined presents. They are getting a yoto box to share, which seems like a crazy expensive present but also I am really into the screen free entertainment gifts. It’s basically a fake cd player for books on tape.

With kid gifts I realised that I should take the toy out of its packaging before I give it to the kids. Kids get no joy from watching me read instructions.  Yesterday the kids each got second hand books and some stickers. They loved it. Tonight they got a disco ball I bought for £5 second hand and a colouring book I also bought from the charity shop for £1 each (nothing had been coloured)

Food we have decided it’s impossible to cook anything so we are only eating freezer leftovers. Tonight we had leftover taco mix in wraps. The day before it was fish pie. Kids are eating a rotation of potatoes and pasta with beans or chicken nuggets or fish fingers. We eat a lot of fruit. I also eat snack bars every night and am currently rationing a selection of mini cliff bars. Turns out chocolate coins make a good 4am snack too.

Reading I have started reading again. I was put off because I didn’t feel I would finish my library books before they were due however I decided to start and then put them on hold again later if needed. Currently listening to Tom Lake which is as good as the internet led me to believe it would be. I have YellowFace on Kindle which I am also enjoying, but I will likely not finish it during the loan period. I am also getting though American Royals book 4 which I got from my local library. If I finish al 3 this month that would make this a 60 book year. But I may not and I’m not pressuring myself to finish.

Forgetting Everything. I sent a card to the wrong zip code. I ordered Christmas presents for family in the USA then forgot to send it to the USA. I packed Isaac yogurt for lunch but forgot a spoon. Yesterday we forgot his whole backpack. I didn’t charge the baby sound machine again tonight. I forgot to reschedule my grocery order for the morning time slot today so it’s coming tomorrow instead. None of these are major of course. All of them make me look forward to the time when my brain works again.

  1. Thanks for the update! Happy Hanukkah! How are you blogging with newborn twins and two children? My hat's off to you.

    1. Thank you! I’m posting from a phone, which may be obvious from the typos and from the total lack of time to proofread anything before I hit “publish”

  2. Happy Hanukkah! I wouldn't mind having some of those chocolate coins right now.

How are you supposed to handle it when you finish a book in a different calendar year then when you started it? Does it count for both years, the year that you started it, or the year that you finished it? I can make a case for all three methods.

    1. Oh I count by when I finished a book. So things I “read” in December I may have started in November, but the date they are assigned is the month/year I finished reading.

  3. Happy Hanukkah! I am very impressed that you managed to do eight gifts each despite having two new babies! (We just do two gifts for the first night.)

I really need to finally get to Yellowface. I preordered it so have had it since the second it came out and still haven't read it. Sigh.

    1. Thank you!! We don’t do Christmas presents from us to the kids, and also we have presents from other family members to give so I haven’t had to actually buy 8 presents each. Also we are pretty lax on what a “present” is for this age. They are getting paint pens one night which I would have bought if it wasn’t Hannukah and just stocked into the art stuff, but instead I split the pens between them and called it a present. -Rachel

    2. Oh and I procrastinated on starting Yellowface but once I started it’s pretty easy reading! Not sure why I waited a week to start… I get stressed about not finishing in the loan time but I definitely won’t finish if I don’t start.

  4. I hate how mushy my brain is postpartum. Yesterday I couldn't remember the word "thesaurus" and resorted to asking my mother "what the word is for not a dictionary but it tells you other words for things." I used to be smart! Somehow I am still managing to do the NYT crossword puzzle everyday but it's hard when a bunch of my vocabulary is missing.

Also that is so frustrating about the USA Christmas presents. I am triple checking everything I've been ordering lately because I am sure I am going to send something to the wrong place.

  5. I enjoyed Tom Lake and Yellowface for different reasons; hopefully you make it through both of them. I don't mind not finishing before the due date but due to your point number five, sometimes they don't always get back in front of me for a while. Do you use Goodreads to track your books? If so, that helps me a lot, as I just leave it on my "currently-reading" shelf, even though it is technically at the library. I have had some books which take a few months to read due to hold wait times x 2!

Happy Hanukkah! I actually use your gift method for Christmas gifts too; I found a game I know my Mom would like months ago, but I put it in a "Christmas gift" stash and now I will wrap everything that I would have just given to people in the middle of the year anyway...

    1. Oh I don’t use goodreads, but I will look into it! I just keep a list on the blog. I tend to forget what I’ve read so it’s nice to track somewhere. -rachel

    2. It is a great tracking tool. I don't usually leave full reviews like some people do, but just star the book when I am done. You can also export your lists to Excel so it helps with my year end Best Of!!
