Meal Plan Monday & Reading List Update

It's Monday again!  We are all tired and potentially ill, so hoping that this week goes OK and we can set our expectations low enough to get through.

We haven't done our Family Operations and Logistics meeting yet, which is a first for us as we always do it Friday, or if not Friday then Saturday, or if not Saturday then Sunday, but we are all shattered.   I will do a longer breakdown of our planning process, but the amazing Sarah Hart-Unger covered this is her blog/pod a few weeks ago when I submitted it to her: Best Laid Plans by Sarah Hart Unger.

We did get our meal plan done, because we have to:

Monday: Lentil Curry & Naan (A)

Tuesday: Chicken Tacos (R)

Wednesday: Leftovers (A)

Thursday: Sausage and Pasta Tray Bake (R)

Friday: Pizza (R)

Still need to work on cultivating some quick recipes but excited to try some from the comments on this post.

I finished Soulful Simplicity yesterday.  Next on my reading list is Tranquility by Tuesday, and I'm not sure whether it's a good idea to start it now or whether it will make me feel worse about the struggle season we are currently in.  I'm aware that this struggle season is mostly situational (ie illness, work stress, illness) rather than systematic/structural, but that knowledge doesn’t improve things too much. Maybe it's time for some fiction to keep me entertained?  I'm keen to read Carrie Soto is Back - I loved Malibu Rising...

As if by magic the local library has just written to tell me they’re ordering me some books I requested. Yay! I love the library.

  1. I'm definitely biases because I participated in the study group for Tranquility by Tuesday, but I think it's Laura V's best book to date and I really, really love how accessible all the "rules" are; highly recommend.
It's so tough when illnesses lag on and on, especially when combined with other stressors. Hoping the clouds - figuratively and literally - lift soon!

    1. Laura V got me on page 2:
"You can keep the plates spinning. With your calendars and your planners you are very good at that, but the performance can consume so much effort that it's easy to become aggravated about the little things. Life can feel like a slog"

I think this is exactly the book I need to read right now! Thanks for the good thoughts and recommendation :-)

  2. Carrie Soto is absolutely beloved by the world, but I was hoping it would get me out of my reading rut and it did NOT and I was disappointed. Be prepared for lots about tennis. That is all.

    1. Haha that is a fair warning thank you! I don't know anything about tennis. I'm 15th in line at the library now so will probably not get my copy until next summer anyways...

  3. Yum I am here for lentil curry. This is something that my family would absolutely not eat and I would love it.

I'll be interested to hear what you think about Carrie Soto. I've heard raves and I've heard what NGS said that it's a lotta tennis. I've only read one Taylor Jenkins Reid book (Evelyn Hugo).

    1. The kids ate plain chick peas and naan bread. I love a curry! I wish I could make them spicier but I know the kids wouldn't eat that.

Will report back on Carrie Soto - what did you think of Evelyn Hugo?

  4. I want to read Tranquility by Tuesday, but they don't have it at my library. I think you should read it- you might get inspired.
How did the lentil curry and naan come out? That dinner sounds delicious!
Hope you all feel better soon.

    1. I've started emailing the library to see if they will order books for me and I was so pleased they ordered Tranquility by Tuesday! They also ordered me a copy of 'I miss you when I blink' when I asked for it.
Apparently not many people request books so they seem keen to get more input. Can you try asking your library to order a copy?

My husband made the curry and it was good! The kids ate plain chick peas because they are crazy, and the little called the naan bread 'pizza' the whole time....

  5. I usually have a at least one non-fiction and one fiction on the go at a time so I can dip into what I feel like or have the energy for in the moment.

    1. This is such a good idea - I have a fiction audio book on the go right now but nothing in real book form. I do find it easier to keep reading momentum with fiction and non fiction on the go... What are you reading right now?

  6. I've been making variations of lentil curry and I love it so much. I could eat it multiple times per week.

I have also requested Tranquilty by Tuesday at the library and am hoping they'll get it to borrow soon.

  7. I am always intruiged by meal planning but for some reason I never really do. Or maybe I do by loosly keeping in mind what needs to be eaten soon. Over the weekend I usually do have some sort of clue but then end up not wanting to cook.
Hope you all feel better soon.

  8. For one, I don't have to meal plan. I just cook a bunch of veggies at the beginning of the week, then rotate in a protein + a carb + veggies + salad for dinner nightly. Boring, yes, but I like boring. (I have eaten the same lunch, most days [i.e. when I am not out to lunch... literally not figuratively!] for the past... 6? 7? years...) I don't envy those who have to accommodate kids, etc. I 'm sure you get used to it, but not my reality so hard to understand!
